Our Development as a Profession: What Will It Take?

It’s been over two years since literacy.ca first highlighted “professionalizing the field”, and while the issue is more crucial than ever, there has been little movement. This lack of progress comes as no surprise in one of the few industrialized countries with no national strategy for adult literacy. Some Canadian jurisdictions have tried to develop broader training systems to establish and recognize literacy work as a legitimate profession, with varying degrees of success. Literacy workers are hungry for ongoing professional development, yet most lack the time and opportunities to work on their own learning. As we push for a comprehensive Pan-Canadian literacy strategy it is important to stress that the strategy must include a framework for developing and supporting our human resources. ...next
