RESOURCES FOR LEARNERS In Our
Words : Canadians Reading Together (2002) A collection of writings involving
adult learners in Nova Scotia. One of the goals of the project is to bring
learners and local authors together in an educational and interactive setting
through creative writing workshops. Soon available online in the NALD Literacy Collection. Newcomers Guide to Security and Rights A site that has animated stories,
information, and exercises to improve your listening, reading, and
vocabulary.You can also learn how to protect yourself and your family from
crime, and what to do in an emergency. A free web-based learning tool for ESL
and adult literacy students. In My Own
Words : Graduation 2002 Yearbook (2002) Contains many stories, articles
and poems written by the students at East End Literacy, in Toronto, during
their graduation year 2001-2002. By improving, and in many cases, excelling in
areas such as reading and writing, speaking and listening, technology and
numeracy skills, the students at EEL have proven that community counts.
Soon available online in the NALD Literacy Collection. Books for
Children and Families (2002) A collection of seven books for
young children and their parents. Draws on themes from Parenting for a Literate
Community (PLC). Targets preschool children and also includes information for
parents, both embedded in the story and in a note for parents. Vocabulary
is Important (2002) An Exercise Book that features 200
new English vocabulary words. Designed not only for academic success, but also
for everyday success in life. Also includes puzzles & games that make the
learning process fun. Stress
Management (2000) For students who feel anxious,
frazzled or just plain worn-out. Students will benefit from the practical
activities on identifying warning signals, responding to
«stressors», positive thinking, negative self-talk, keeping a
journal, and committing to change. Quitting
for Life (2000) An excellent resource for students
who are thinking about overcoming their smoking habit. A handbook that takes
students through the four phases of quitting: preparing to quit; choosing a
quit date; coping with withdrawl; and fighting relapses. Activities include
maintaining a smoking log and identifying coping with their smoking
