A Draft Framework for the
Community Learning Networks - Tool Kit and Discussion Guide
(1998) Intent of this document is to solicit reaction to a
draft framework and to generate discussion and suggestions, such as
the contents, selection criteria, resources that are currently
available, maintaining and keeping the Tool Kit up-to-date, etc.
Potential to be a dynamic support system for all those involved in
establishing and maintaining Community Learning Networks (CLN's)

educators organized under topics relevant to both classroom teachers
and teacher educators. Includes : Rethinking Literacy; Interventions;
Organizing Instruction to Meet Diverse Student Needs; Fostering
Reading for Meaning; Improving Family and Community Collaboration,
etc. Transitions to Postsecondary Learning - School and life self-advocacy skills for students with learning disabilities and/or ADD, Video (1998) Intended for those who are moving from high school
to postsecondary learning. Each 45 minute video is divided into three
sections for instructional flexibility and to accommodate varying
learning styles. A complete instructional package included with each
video : teacher/facilitator video discussion guide, a self-advocacy
handbook, and a reproducible student work guide. All videos with the
closed-captioning option. Chronicling the Learning
Curve : Workplace Education Instructors Share Their Stories
(1998) A collection of narratives written by workplace
education instructors, is an intimate look at teaching basic skills in
different cultures - the culture of organizations, professions and
communities with all the diversity of the people who work in them.
Instructors were asked to tell their best stories of how they taught,
how people learned, and most importantly, how everyone changed -
including the organizations. Charting a New Course (1998) A report of the Ocean of Learning, Nova Scotia
Community Learning Initiative (CLI) - Practitioners Forum, which took
place in April 1998. CLI is a province-wide program that provides
funding, practitioner training and support to 27 community-based
Learning Networks. In turn, these networks offer a wide variety of
literacy and upgrading opportunities which target every segment of our
society. Literacy Awareness Media
Kit (1998) A media kit that contains posters, electronic and
camera-ready art from ABC CANADA's new LIVE & LEARN print
campaign, the complete inventory of ABC CANADA television and radio
public service announcements, as well as a media handbook loaded with
tips on preparing media releases and working with the media, tips on
producing a successful special event and handy literacy fact sheets. Preparing for
Technological Change - Final Report (1998) A project which was initiated to study and implement
an effective communication system between the Southwestern Ontario
Adult Literacy Network (SOALN) and the literacy programs it serves.
Primary purpose was to ensure that all affected programs had the
equipment, software and knowledge to effectively access and use the
conference features of the Alpha Com network. ![]() Annotated Bibliography of
Computer Resources for ESL and LINC (1997) Reviews software resources and websites, as well as
reference material for using technology in ESL and LINC programs. Also
provides an introductory guide to technology planning, an extensive
glossary of computer-related terms, and an index of resources. Information Needs and
Strategies of Canadians with Lower Literacy Skills
(1997) A report which keys in on the findings of the
International Adult Literacy Survey and reviews "coping
strategies" used by those Canadians to deal with departments such
as Revenue Canada (e.g., filling out income tax returns) and large
institutions such as banks. The report is one part of Revenue Canada's
ongoing effort to improve its services to Canadians with lower levels
of literacy. Play-Making : A
Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners
(1997) A how-to book that sets out step-by-step the process
used to write, rehearse and perform the play, "Just Plain Nuts -
No Offense," which was staged by three learners from Project
Literacy Victoria. The project was designed to illustrate the
emotional problems experienced by reaming disabled children with low
literacy skills. KET Adult Learning Quarterly A newsletter produced by KET, The Kentucky Network,
Enterprise Division and distributed to adult educators and those with
related interests. Articles examine methods and technologies; explore
locations and applications; and feature leaders who find successful,
innovative ways to reach adult learners using KET materials. Literacy Workbook Series Fills the need for low-level literacy materials
tackling everyday issues for clients in a Basic Literacy Program. Each
workbook contains reading lessons followed by writing exercises
designed to enhance literacy skills and reinforce understanding of
materials contained in the lessons. The titles are as follows :
Hurting People : A Victim Awareness Manual; Addictions &
Employments; Understanding Anger : An Anger Management Manual; Health
& the Environment; Relationships & Personal Development. With one Stone - A
Canadian Grammar Series for ABE Students
(1997) Instructional material which is adult oriented,
sequential, skill-based, instructive and includes cumulative reviews,
has evaluation tools, answer keys and teaches about Canada. Exercises
that use Canadian content so the student learns about Canada at the
same time as he/she learns grammar and writing skills. A Basic Cultural-Critical
(ABCC) Literacy Program : Instructor/Tutor Resource Guide
(1996) Represents a synthesis of the key principles of
adult and adolescent literacy in constructing a literacy program.
Based on content that is meaningful, representing such areas such as :
social studies, politics, economics, health, education, law,
consumerism, and driver education. 45 sessions, each divided into two
parts - Part A : Reading, Thinking and Learning and Part B : Writing,
Thinking and Doing. Accommodating Adults with
Disabilities in Adult Education Programs
(1998) Notebook consisting of five sections that include
information on individual and programmatic legal rights and
responsibilities and step-by-step procedures for accommodating
learners. Back On Track (1994) Exercises to improve reading and writing skills.
Manual designed for residents in correctional institutions who want to
improve their reading and writing skills. Set up in easy to follow
modules, and deals with skills development by using topics that are of
interest to the learner. |
