An overriding principle of this project, which is supported by research in literacy education for students who are Deaf, is that when literacy learning involves two languages, competencies in the first language need to be used to support learning in the second language. For this reason, the basic stories on the CDs include video clips of the English text signed in ASL. Pre-reading activities that accompany each story include exercises that develop background information and familiarize the student with English syntax, idiomatic expressions and vocabulary. Although these CDs will not be available for wider distribution, the project coordinators are attempting to secure funding to develop similar resources that will be available to educators of students who are Deaf. They are also looking for potential partners. For more information on the Deaf Focus Room Project and the support services available at NorQuest College, contact the coordinators Suzanne Panteluk and Janice Mills at (780) 427-5467 or email Suzanne.Paneluk@norquest.ca * Submitted by Flo Brokop, Learning Support Services, NorQuest College, flo.brokop@norquest.ca Introducing First Steps A partnership between Alphacom, Elit, the Hub, NALD and NWT Literacy Council/North of 60, First Steps is undertaking a process of research, consultation with the field and strategic planning towards the creation of a national literacy electronic conferencing system.
