The following story was written by Faye Belhumeur, from Swan River, Manitoba. Faye is presently enrolled at the Swan River Adult Education Program. Her first goal when she began upgrading was to obtain her GED, which she did. Now, she is working towards her Mature Student Grade 12 Diploma.
My First Date My first date happened in a very unusual way. First off, it was arranged by a friend. The big date was to take place public skating at the local arena. Was I ever nervous. Imagine me going on a date with Saul Falen, who looked like Paul McCartney. This being the sixties, anyone resembling a Beatle was hot! My poor finger nails were stubs by the time I got to the rink. Head down, I made a beeline for the opposite end of the waiting room. Heaven forbid he should be looking at me! On went my skates. Somehow we both made it to the ice at the same time. Once on the ice, we fumbled for each others hand and started skating the rounds. His eyes focused straight ahead and mine also. Round and round we went skating to the music, never once looking at each other. Finally the buzzer went, announcing public skating was over. Thank heavens! I was a total wreck by then. Hands parted as our skates left the ice, him going in one direction and I in the other. By this time I just wanted out of there. Skates off, out the door I went. I was totally in love.
