Grades five and seven had readings from the works of Newfoundland writers. The grade five classes, studying Grandparents’ Days, enjoyed Dr. Calvin Powell reading the old remedies in Greta Hussey’s book “ My Life at Lears’ Room”. Dr. Powell provided a valuable discussion on the medical background of the remedies. The grade seven students hosted their mayor, Mr. Wilbur Sparkes. Mr. Sparkes is well known for his story telling ability as well as his many years as a hockey player, in which he is still actively participating. He brought out the humour in Ted Rusell’s “The Hockey Game”.

Hockey official, David Crane from the 1999 Canada Winter Games had an excellent session with the grade nine class. He talked about his experiences at the Games and read his selection of “The Street Lawyer” by John Grisham. As the grade four class was watching a video of the opening ceremonies of the Games, they were pointing out two local hockey players, Matthew French and Brent Roach, when the two arrived at the door for a visit. The class was excited and impressed as they read “The Dragon in the Rock” by Marie Day.

The READ-IN was exciting as well as a great learning experience for the students. The event truly demonstrated the importance of reading to people of all ages and in all walks of life. All the participants expressed their appreciation for being invited. St. Mark’s thanked them with a gift of one of the featured books of the day by Mrs. Greta Hussey. The READ-IN was a memorable experience for all.
