Homework Havens |
Great success on Northern PeninsulaThe Lend-A-Hand Homework Haven in Parson's Pond has been operating since April and receives a lot of public support. "The Homework Haven is overseen by Pam Keough, a very dedicated volunteer," says Boyd Perry, Literacy Outreach Worker for the region. "Pam is the coordinator for the program and goes well above the volunteer call of duty. She not only coordinates the other volunteers, develops schedules and arranges meetings, but she also manages to work with children at the Homework Haven." The Homework Haven operates out of St. Francis Elementary school and receives support from the teaching staff. The Homework Haven is provided to students three times a week from 2 - 3:30 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. A reading circle is provided to the children before each Homework Haven session. A Homework Haven training session is provided to each of the volunteers before they start. This service is provided by the Literacy Outreach Office - RED Ochre Regional Board. Mr. Perry hopes a video of the local Homework Haven will be available for the Learner/Volunteer Forum in March. The purpose of the video is to share this idea with other towns and communities throughout the Northern Peninsula. |
