Humber Literacy Council This project involves the continuation and expansion of the Books for Babies
program. An effort will be made to continue to search for funding to expand to
other areas of the province. The Books for Babies program is well recognized
throughout the province. It was recently awarded the Flight for Freedom Award
by Canada Post. Seniors Resource Centre Partial funding was awarded to assist with the publication costs associated
with the production of 500 health and well being booklets for older adult
beginning readers. This project was also supported by the National Literacy
Secretariat. Holy Cross School Monies were awarded to assist with the establishment of a preschool program
entitled "More Success in Kindergarten". This program was developed
to assist children entering Holy Cross School. Brighter Futures Coalition This project involved the continuation of early intervention programs at
five sites in the St. John's region. The program is entitled PRINTS (Parents
Roles Interacting with Teacher Support). Brighter Futures Coalition Partial funding was awarded to assist parents participating in the Prints
program to display low cost activities they have made for fostering early
literacy development in their children and to have attendees at the display
share information about family/early literacy and about the program. MacMorran Community Centre Funds were provided to assist with the operation of a Homework Help Program
at the MacMorran Community Centre. Services provided include study/help
sessions and computers for educational purposes. St. Matthew's School This project involved the establishment of a preschool program for students
entering St. Matthew's School. Children will attend five two hour sessions
spread over a five week period. Parents will be provided with specific work for
each session, which the cooperating teacher will develop. Baie Verte Peninsula Funds were provided to assist with the publication of a book entitled
"Prose and Poetry ,of our Province: The Collective Works of George
Welshman". This material is intended to provide a greater awareness of
Newfoundland and Labrador culture. Curtoglen Literacy Learning Centre Committee This project involved the continued operation of the Curtoglen Literacy
Learning Centre. Activities at the Centre include Booky the Bears Playroom, the
setting up of an early intervention program and a program for tots and parents.
The Riverhead Recreation Committee Partial funding was provided to assist with piloting a Learning Centre. This
Centre will house a program entitled "Helping Parents Helping Children to
Read to Succeed". This program will be available to all preschool children
and their families throughout the St. Mary's Bay region. Leafs Foundation Partial Funding was awarded to assist with a program entitled "Agree to
Read". The Foundation will be developing bookmarks for students in Grades
4-6. These bookmarks are being distributed province-wide with the help of the
Department of Education and the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers'
Association. Deer Lake Community Learning Centre Funds were provided to assist with the establishment of an early
intervention program for parents and their children. The program is entitled
PRINTS (Parents Roles Interacting With Teacher Support). |
