Literacy Awards Presented

On October 30, 2001 a number of literacy awards were presented at an event sponsored by Canada Post Corporation and the Literacy Development Council of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The awards presentation was held at The Delta Hotel in St. Johns and representatives from literacy groups, school districts, schools, government, Memorial University, colleges and the general public were in attendance.

Mr. Bob Mullett, Canada Post Manager of Public Sector for Newfoundland & Labrador and Nova Scotia, was the Master of Ceremonies for the event and Mr. Frank Connors, Director of Operations, also of Canada Post presented the annual Canada Post Literacy Awards for Newfoundland and Labrador. The Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland & Labrador, His Honor, Dr. A. M. House, was also in attendance' to present the Literacy Development Council's Print Media Award. The Community Leadership Award, which recognizes non-profit, volunteer and labor organizations that have demonstrated a long-term commitment to furthering the literacy cause, was presented to the Battle Harbour Literacy Council of Labrador for their contribution to literacy in their area.

Mr. Richard Miller of Shoal Harbour was the recipient of the Canada Post Individual Achievement Award.

The Literacy Development Council's Print Media Award is presented to a local newspaper or publication in recognition of their promotion of literacy through the print media. This year the Print Media Award was presented to the Humber Log for their history of featuring articles on literacy.

BOOK LAUNCH

The Women on Fogo Island imageOn December 10, 2001, the Fogo Island Literacy Association held a reception to officially launch their new publication 'Women of Fogo Island: Hear them Speak'. Della Coish Director of the Literacy Development Council was quest speaker for the event. The publication was made possible through the support of the National Literacy Secretariat, Human Resources Development Canada. The text is a compilation of stories from the women of the island, all of which reflect its history ad culture. The book was written by Sonja M. Foley, Coordinator of the Fogo Island Literacy Association. Copies may be obtained by calling the Fogo Island Literacy Association at (709) 266-2 28
