During the past year we have witnessed significant changes within the Councilthe appointment of a new Executive Director and, most recently, the appointment of a new slate of Council members. This year appears to be no different. Mr. Adrian Papanek, Program Consultant with the National Literacy Secretariat for the Atlantic Region and advisory member of Council, has been seconded to another Federal Department effective January 5, 1998. During the past two years, I, along with many of the literacy stakeholders throughout the province, have gotten to know Adrian both on a professional and personal level. Adrian's sense of wit, intelligence, professionalism, and protocol are exemplary. I have always been impressed with his diligence and hard work. Adrian's dedication and ability to analyze prospective literacy initiatives has earned him the respect of the literacy community. Time and time again, Adrian's insights and support have been attested to by my provincial colleagues. His valued expertise will be greatly missed. On behalf of literacy stakeholders throughout the province, we wish Adrian well in his future endeavours.
Recently, staff of the Literacy Development Council conducted a survey of First-Time Readers. More than 95% of the comments made by readers were extremely positive. Here's a sample of some of the comments made: I really appreciate First-Time Readers. I never went to school much, now l am 67 years old. I feel so proud of myself because l can read and understand First-Time Readers. I would like to see one every month. I am unable to fill out forms, etc. My wife does all the paper work at our house. It's very frustrating trying to read when I only know half the words. So, please keep First-Time Readers coming I read all kinds of books, magazines, newspapers, etc., reading the First-Time Readers, I found it very enjoyable and enjoyed reading it to the end. Love the paper!...lt is very interesting to read ..l think it is a good way to improve your reading I don't have much education, I am having this wrote by my daughter to tell you how much I like this paper. It is very nice reading and I would like to read more of them. I find it very informative and interesting Because your insert is available through the local newspaper, it has become a great asset with my tutoring This paper is very well done. An excellent job, very easy to read and understand. Thank you. OOPS!!!!! We would like to apologize to Dr. Bill Fagan for failing to credit him with the article entitled Unraveling the Literacy Maze in our October issue of the Notepad.
