From the Editor's Desk Don McDonald

From time to time guest editors are invited to contribute to The Literacy Notepad. Ed Wade is the Literacy Coordinator for the Froude Avenue Community Centre (St. John's) and a member of the Literacy Development Council of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Froude Avenue Community Centre has been a provider of literacy services for a number of years with the cooperation and support of the Literacy Development Council.

It is because of community interest that this Centre has been able to provide service to children before the school day begins through its breakfast program, during the day through its pre-school program, and after school through its after-school homework program.

Through the continued support of the Literacy Development Council, we are able to support the literacy needs of the community. We hope that in the Fall we will be able to expand the programs to meet the needs of many more.

Literacy is alive and well. Thanks to the Literacy Development Council and Good Luck in your future endeavors. Have a great summer.

Canada Book Day at St. Augustine's Elementary

Canada Book Day was celebrated in a big way on April 27, 2000 at St. Augustine's Elementary School, St. John's. Using a similar format as READ-IN 2000, the school invited people within the community to read a book to a class. People responded with enthusiasm and in great numbers. There were approximately 26 members from the community who came in to read to classes. The books for the readings were recommended by Granny Bates Children's Books.

The Literacy Development Council congratulates St. Augustine's School for organizing this event. We also thank all of the members of the community and students who participated.
