This is the second year the Literacy Development Council of Newfoundland and
Labrador sponsored READ-IN. This activity simply means that schools are
encouraged to invite people from the community to visit a classroom and read to
and with the children. The purpose of the Read-In is to emphasize in an active
way the importance of reading in everyone's life. It is a way of bringing
community and schools together to promote reading.
This year Read-In 2000 involved 23 schools throughout the province. The

The Literacy Development Council in cooperation with the Department of
Education, awarded $500 to each of four schools whose names were drawn by the
Honourable Judy Foote, Minister of Education with Dr. William T. Fagan,
Chairperson of the Council on KIXX Country. The winning schools were:

Family Literacy Conference
The Family Literacy Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador (Steering Committee)
will host a conference on family literacy this fall for parents, early
childhood and primary educators, policy makers and others with an interest in
the field. The conference is scheduled for October 26 to 29 at the Battery
