READ-IN 2000


This is the second year the Literacy Development Council of Newfoundland and Labrador sponsored READ-IN. This activity simply means that schools are encouraged to invite people from the community to visit a classroom and read to and with the children. The purpose of the Read-In is to emphasize in an active way the importance of reading in everyone's life. It is a way of bringing community and schools together to promote reading.

This year Read-In 2000 involved 23 schools throughout the province. The schools that participated were:

Belanger Memorial Riverwood Academy
Catalina Elementary School Roncalli Central High School
Clarenville Primary School St. Anne's Academy
Cowan Heights Elementary School St. Andrew's Elementary
Curtoglen Literacy Centre St. Joseph's School
Gander Academy St. Mary's All Grade School
Gill Memorial Academy St. Stephen's All Grade School
Henry Gordon Academy St. Teresa's - Ecole Ste Terese
Holy Cross Elementary & St. Thomas of Villanova School
Froude Avenue Community Centre William Mercer Academy

The Literacy Development Council in cooperation with the Department of Education, awarded $500 to each of four schools whose names were drawn by the Honourable Judy Foote, Minister of Education with Dr. William T. Fagan, Chairperson of the Council on KIXX Country. The winning schools were:

Cowan Heights Elementary St. John's
St. Teresa's - Ecole Ste Terese St. John's
William Mercer Academy Dover

Family Literacy Conference


The Family Literacy Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador (Steering Committee) will host a conference on family literacy this fall for parents, early childhood and primary educators, policy makers and others with an interest in the field.
