The newly-opened Discovery Centre for Community Education in Clarenville held its official opening Feb. 16. The centre is sponsored by the Human Resources Client Centre. It is designed to make Adult Basic Education available to all residents in the area. Levels 1, 2 and 3 are offered free of charge to students on a walk-in basis. Extended hours and a supported home study program allow students the flexibility to work at their own pace. There are 210 students registered with the program. Six students take part in Level 1 studies, 95 in Level 2 and 109 in Level 3.
"Over the past few years, the interest and demand for Adult Basic Education has increased throughout Newfoundland and Labrador," says spokesperson Mark Vivian. "Two complaints often heard, however, concern the expense of attending if you're not eligible for sponsored training and the regular hours required each day."
The centre is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. Adults who did not complete high school or want to upgrade their education skills are welcome to attend. Private literacy tutoring is also available. A community advisory board has been established to help run the centre with administrative support provided by Provincial Learning Centers Inc.
Lester Fry enjoys studying at the Discovery Centre in Clarenville. Volunteer tutors assist Mr. Fry and others with Adult Basic Education courses.
