Council announces changes

The March Budget and Program Review meant changes for the Literacy Development Council Newfoundland and Labrador. The administration of the Council will be shared jointly with the Provincial Public Libraries. Both groups will share an Executive Director (David Gale) and other personnel. The Council office on Blackmarsh Road, St. John's, will eventually be closed and operations moved to the Arts and Culture Center, St. John's. The Literacy Development Council office will remain open in Grand Fails-Windsor.

The Council will still maintain its identity and Council members will continue to make policy for its operation. The Executive Director, as in the past, will report to the Council. The Council will not report to the Provincial Public Libraries. Both bodies are equal in terms of their respective responsibilities. The Provincial Government maintained its level of financial support for the Council and money saved in salaries, rent, etc., will be available for projects and activities within the Council.

The move is still in progress and as day-to-day procedures are operationalized, an update will be provided in a subsequent edition of The Notepad.
