Recognizes Literacy Action Day

In recognition of Literacy Action Day, February 19, 1998, The Literacy Development Council established a literacy essay contest for school children and adult learners throughout the province. First, second, and third place prizes were awarded in three categories and we are pleased to publish the winning essays, as written by each student, in this edition of the Notepad.

I like reading because you can learn a lot from reading and the stuff I like to read the most is action books because they are cool books. Reading is the thing that we do a lot of in school because everybody likes doing it and it's also good for our future. I also like to read fact books because some are scary and if they are true it's hard to believe and then you have to think about it and that gets your brain working.

My favorite book is the (Titanic Lost and Found) because it's packed with action and it's fact. The (Titanic Lost and Found) tells a story what really happened when a ship struck an iceberg and sank.

Books are very important for our future because when we get in university we will have to read huge books.

Reading is not like watching a movie because when you are watching a movie you can see the pictures but when your are reading you have to picture the pictures in your head but the best thing I like best is Reading!!!

My favorite bedtime story is one my Dad and I made up. The story is about an Alien. His name is B.3. and he has two eyes and two nostrils. B.3. has a BIG BRAIN! Even though his brain is big, B.3. doesn't know how to use it. By the way he's kind of WACCO.

One day I heard the news say, "Be careful, don't go out of your house". The next day everyone went out and saw a big hole at City hall. From that day on Scientists studied the hole and found a strange thing. Only I know what the thing is...It's how B.3. came to me. I will never tell!

My Name is Brittany Benoit and I am in grade Two. I love to read, because it is exciting to learn about all kinds of things. In my school I visit the Library everyday and take out some books. I read stories of animals, people and different places. Some books are about things that happen now, but others are about a long time ago. My favorite book that I have read was called "My Buddy". This book was about a young boy that got a special kind of dog. The dog became the boy's hands and feet, because the boy is in a wheelchair. I think that boy is very lucky to get a dog that can do things for him. I hope many boys and girls in wheelchairs learn about these dogs and can get one of the* own to help them with things that they cannot do now.

Now I have to go and read my Library Books for tonight, I am going to visit Paris and meet Madeline. My other book is going to take me to Japan and I'm going to read about what they use to eat with in their Country. The name of this book is "How My Parents Learn to Eat". Well good night, I can't wait until tomorrow night to see where I might go or who I will meet.
