| St. Mary's Development Association Monies were awarded to assist the St. Mary's Development Association in
preserving oral history. The overall impact is to mobilize and motivate people
in understanding the role of oral history in promoting literacy practices and
providing opportunities where people, as a community, engage in reading,
writing, language sharing, discussion, decision making, and participate in
community literacy events. Curtoglen Literacy Centre This project involves the continued operation of the Curtoglen Literacy
Learning Centre. Activities at the centre include "Booky the Bear's
Playroom", and the setting up of an early literacy intervention program
for tots and parents. Community Education Centre St. Lunaire-Griquet & Area Corp. The goal of this project is to implement a model or framework for
"Collaboration and Coordination of Family/Early Literacy" programs on
the Northern Peninsula region of the Province. This project will be implemented
by using PRINTS (Parents Roles Interacting with Teacher Support) as a motivator
to get reluctant parents, who have weak literacy skills, involved in their
children's education. Partners in Learning Funding was awarded to assist the Learning Centre in offering the PRINTS
(Parents Roles Interacting with Teacher Support) program in two communities
along the Labrador Straits. The purpose is to empower parents of young children
in giving their children a head start in literacy development. St. Lewis Academy Funds were awarded to assist St. Lewis Academy in purchasing the WiggleWorks
program. This program is unique as it combines an exciting software program
with quality children's literature. The intent of this project is to increase
the level of resource materials available to preschool and school-age children.
These resources will support them as they become successful readers and
writers. The Learning Centre Funds were awarded to assist The Learning Centre with the continuation of
basic literacy services. The goal of this project is to expand the existing
program to accommodate a larger number of learners. Goulds Elementary School Funds were awarded to help the Goulds Elementary School improve the entry
level of many disadvantaged students and Kindergarten students who are
experiencing difficulty. A Pre-Kindergarten and Remediation program will be
offered to assist young students in having a more positive start to their
formal education and giving all students a successful and a pleasant
introduction to school. MacMorran Community Centre Funds were provided to assist with the operation of a Homework Help program
at the MacMorran Community Centre. The focus of this project is on providing
the children with reading and writing strategies while helping them with their
homework requirements. The goal is that they become independent learners. St. Joseph's Early Literacy Network Funds were provided to assist with the establishment of am early
intervention program. This program is entitled PRINTS (Parents Roles
Interacting with Teacher Support).This comprehensive program that provides
activities for parents in five contexts in which literacy develops: talk, play,
books and book sharing, environmental print, scribbling, and drawing and
writing. Upper Gullies Elementary School Funds were provided to assist Upper Gullies Elementary implement a
family/early intervention literacy- based program designed to assist "at
risk" children in their acquisition of literacy- related concepts prior to
school entry. Burin Peninsula Laubach Literacy Council Funds were awarded to assist the Burin Peninsula Laubach Literacy Council in
implementing the AParents as Teaching Partners A program. This project is based
on the belief that literacy begins in the home and is developed by the school.
This four day program offers parents a forum to discuss problems in a
non-intimidating environment.
Kay Linehan/Mary Dobbin Funds were provided to assist with the establishment of an early
intervention program. This program is entitled PRINTS (Parents Roles
Interacting with Teacher Support). The intended impact is to empower seniors to
become partners in young children's literacy experiences. |
