NLS Supports New Literacy
Clearinghouse Project

The Provincial Information and Library Resources Board in collaboration with the Literacy Branch of the Department of Education and the Literacy Development Council of Newfoundland and Labrador has received funding from NLS to establish a Literacy Clearinghouse. Judy Escott (some readers may remember her as Judy Anderson) has been hired for one year as the coordinator for the Literacy Clearinghouse project.

Graphic: a photograph of Judy EscottJudy has been busy reviewing literacy resources including books for tutors to use with students, books for new adult readers, and information for practitioners and researchers. In addition to existing materials, new resources will be purchased to enhance the collection. Literacy groups, practitioners and learners, will be encouraged to borrow materials.

It is also hoped that groups that have developed materials will donate copies to the Literacy Clearinghouse so that they can be shared with others. Judy will be contacting groups and traveling to meet with literacy providers in the near future. For additional information on the Literacy Clearinghouse project contact Judy at (709) 737-3976 or email judyescott@nlpubliclibraries.ca
