Building Networks

Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's June 17 - 21, 2003 - This four day Institute will bring together up to 60 people who are involved in adult literacy research in practice. The event builds on previous Canadian consultations about literacy research and will draw from current endeavors to support research in practice in Canada and elsewhere. The gathering will be of interest to new and experienced researchers in the adult literacy field, including literacy teachers, facilitators or program coordinators and university-based and independent researchers.

Intentions

  • To build on previous research in practice events and extend the research in practice networks, particularly in Atlantic Canada.
  • To provide opportunities for researchers in practice from various settings to engage in dialogue, in order to share and build knowledge about literacy research in practice.
  • To continue to develop concepts / models of literacy research in practice.
  • To provide opportunities for researchers in practice to develop and extend their skills / knowledge of research.
  • To strengthen capacity for qualitative research in adult literacy practice in the country.
  • To link with related research in practice efforts.

Sponsors / Partners

The Community-Based Literacy Network, The Research in Practice in Adult Literacy (RiPAL) Network, Memorial University of Newfoundland and The Brother T.I. Murphy Learning Centre are co-sponsoring the Institute, with funding from The National Literacy Secretariat. Travel subsidies for Newfoundland and Labrador delegates have been provided by the Literacy Development Council of Newfoundland & Labrador. Helen Woodrow (The Community-Based Literacy Network) and Ann McCann (Brother T. I. Murphy Learning Centre) are organizing the institute, in consultation with colleagues from across Canada and elsewhere.

Schedule

The institute starts at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening, June 17 with registration and a reception. The program begins at 9 a.m. on June 18, and ends with lunch on June 21.

Cost

The Institute registration fee is $135. The fee includes all program materials, the opening reception, a Newfoundland and Labrador "time" with dinner, and all breakfasts and lunches from June 18-21.
