Family Literacy Day

Bishop's Falls Correctional Centre

The inmates at Bishop's Falls Correctional Centre participated in a number of activities in recognition of "Family Literacy Day 2003". A poster was designed by inmates registered in the school program. The poster promoted family literacy and was displayed in the main lobby of the correctional centre.

In addition, each inmate was given the opportunity to send a story book home to a child. Some of the books were donated by the Salvation Army while others were purchased. Books were also placed in the visiting area so a child visiting would have the opportunity to read a book. The inmates also made baby board books and alphabet books in the school to distribute among children.

On "Family Literacy Day", January 27, 2003 several inmates participated in a scrabble competition and a game of Balderdash. prizes, such as t-shirts provided by "Family Literacy Day" sponsors were awarded to inmates. All inmates who participated in the scrabble competition were presented with a certificate of achievement for their efforts. Pencils, bookmarks, and magnets were also distributed to all inmates.

Participation was great for the event and it was indeed a tremendous success!

Family Literacy Day in Cartwright

Graphic: a small section of the map of Newfoundland On January 27, 2003, the Family Resource Centre, Community Youth Network, and the Eagle River Literacy Council provided a fun filled day with the pre-kindergarten class through to grade 6 to celebrate the national annual Family Literacy Day!

All activities were held in the public library, which is housed in the local school. Children were greeted at the door and given a free bookmark for them to keep and take home. The children were then paired with a reading buddy and or the next 20 minutes, sat and enjoyed having a book read to them. A reading tent was set up and two local residents provided fun interactive reading for the children. Kids between pre-kindergarten and grade 3, were provided with materials to make their own book and kids in grades 4-6 were asked to write their own funny stories.

At the end of the activities prized were drawn and more gifts were given away!
