Mr. Mansbridge is the signature anchor for CBC television news and the network's host and journalist for most major news and sports events. He was named PGI National Spokesperson early in 2003. Mr. Mansbridge has been associated with the PGIs since 1991, when he was invited by Peter Gzowski to attend the PGI Briars in Sutton, Ontario.

Graphic: a silouette of a flag and a golf club above the letters Mansbridge confirms that the literacy cause carries added significance because of his professional and personal connection to the printed word. He adds that his involvement in these tournaments is driven by the knowledge that over 22 per cent of Canadian adults do not possess the reading and writing skills needed in everyday life: "Who among us can imagine a life without the ability to read the news, enjoy a great book, or have the chance to get ahead in whatever possibilities life might hold?"

Additional special guests at the 2003 tournament will include Premier Roger Grimes, Education Minister, Gerry Reid and Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable Ed Roberts.

Local recording artist Barry Canning will be performing at the Night Before Social on June 18th and entertainer Glenn Downey will be participating in the tournament as Poet Laureate.

The Newfoundland and Labrador PGI Committee anticipates a successful tournament this year and is grateful for the support of Peter Mansbridge and all national and local tournament sponsors.
