St. Bernard's Primary School Funds were awarded to support the implementation of a literacy program for parents of preschool children. St. Bernard's Primary plans to offer a PRINTS program to parents of preschool children in the Witless Bay area. Amount awarded: $5,000. Fatima Academy Funds were approved to support a preschool book exchange program designed to provide children with ageappropriate literature to nurture early literacy needs. Parents will also be provided with appropriate models on reading aloud to their children and follow up activities to support literacy opportunities in the home. Amount awarded: $1,323. Deer Lake Community Learning Centre This project involves the continuation of basic literacy services from the Deer Lake Community Learning Centre. It is the group's intention to offer a full range of basic literacy support services for a six month period through the continued operation of the Centre. Amount Awarded: $17,512. Brighter Futures Coalition of St. John's and District
Monies were provided to continue the operation of a PRINTS program in St. John's. This award will cover salaries for three facilitators responsible for the project. Amount Awarded: $1,620. Gander Community Education Committee This project involves a series of activities designed to promote life long learning among residents in the Gander region. The project will be operated from the Gander Regional Library. One example of the list of activities includes an exchange of letters among children and seniors. Amount awarded: $4,000. Burin Peninsula Laubach Literacy Council Monies were provide to assist with the continued operation of the Learn for Tomorrow Centre in Marystown. This Centre caters to the needs of area residents with support from the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, Laubach Literacy of Canada, and other local literacy supporters. Amount Awarded: $ 14,000. Vista School Board This project involves the development and distribution of three
video tapes and pamphlets related to vision, hearing, and language development.
The tapes are intended to assist parents, educators, and professionals identify
difficulties which may be potential barriers to children's learning. Teachers On Wheels Funding was approved to support the continued operation of Teachers On Wheels through its Literacy 1999 Building Arks program. The program includes the provision of literacy services for adults, administrative responsibilities of the main office, promotion of the organization, and literacy advocacy. Amount awarded: $40,000. Virginia Park Community Centre This project was created as a result of research supported by the National Literacy Secretariat in 1998. The project is entitled Learning Enhancement for Adults and Resource Networking (LEARN). The LEARN program will establish a community centre as a resource hub where residents of Virginia Park can seek information and support when contemplating a return to school, acquisition of job training, or entry into the workforce. Amount awarded: $10,655. Workplace Education Network This workplace education project will attempt to develop a plan to initiate and implement a workplace literacy program among members of unions who are St. John's municipal workers. Part of the plan involves conducting a needs assessment, revising and supplementing the program throughout the implementation period, and disseminating the plan to other stakeholders. Amount awarded: $5,500. Gaskiers/Point La Haye Recreation Committee Funds were awarded to support the implementation of a literacy program for parents of preschool children. The Gaskiers/Point La Haye Recreation Committee plans to offer a PRINTS program to parents of preschool children in the St. Mary's Bay region. Amount awarded: $5,000. St. Joseph's Early Literacy Network Monies were awarded to support the implementation of a literacy program for parents of preschool children. The St. Joseph's Early Literacy Network plans to offer a PRINTS program to parents of preschool children in the St. Joseph's, Salmonier region. Amount awarded: $5,000. Sacred Heart Parish Council Funds were awarded to support the implementation of a literacy program for parents of preschool children. The Sacred Heart Parish Council plans to offer a PRINTS program to parents of preschool children in St. Vincent's. Amount awarded: $5,000. Centreville Academy A Read With Me/Preschool Program will be offered at Centreville Academy as a result of monies awarded to this project. Centreville Academy has been offering a number of preschool activities to parents in the region for the past number of years. This award will provide mainly for materials and resources to support these activities. Amount awarded: $2,950. Our Lady of Labrador School Funds were provided to assist with the preschool component of a literacy program for parents and children in the communities of Capstan Island, Pinware, and West St. Modeste. A book bag program will be introduced as well as reading activities for parents and children. Amount awarded: $7,500. ABE Writing Network Funds were provided to cover the travel costs for an adult
learner to attend the Montreal Literacy Festival which took place April 23-25,
1999. The learner was accompanied by a representative of the Adult Basic
Education Writing Network. |
