NLAAE holds AGM in Gander

The Newfoundland and Labrador Association for Adult Education (NLAAE) held its annual general meeting Nov. 1 to 3 in Gander. The theme of the three-day conference was, "Looking In, Looking Out, Connecting Reality and Vision."

"All the institutes and workshops were related to our theme,"says Roberta Yetman, president of the NLAAE. "We looked inside our association and we looked inside our province. We then looked outside our association and outside our province to help connect the reality of what's going on with the vision we, and others, have for adult education in the future."

White Hills, Moss recieve prestigious literacy awards

A rolling stone may gather no moss, but Newfoundland's White Hills and Moss recently gathered a little stone.

That stone was a solid crystal trophy honouring their commitment to literacy. The White Hills Literacy Council and Clane Moss were recipients of Canada Post's 1996 Flight for Freedom Awards. The awards were presented by The Right Honourable Romeo LeBlanc, Governor General of Canada, during a gala event in Quebec City on Sept. 9.

The White Hills Council is a non-profit organization serving the communities of Burlington, Middle Arm and Smith's Harbour. Its mission is to address the needs of literacy in the local communities and to provide learners with the opportunity to upgrade their skills in reading and writing.

That commitment to literacy was acknowledged with the presentation of The Government of Canada Literacy Innovation Award. This award is sponsored by the National Literacy Secretariat and presented to a group which promotes and provides literacy projects and programs within their community.
