Outer Bay of Islands Round Table, Inc. Monies were awarded to assist with the accumulation of materials and
supplies for an eight week summer reading program for primary children in Lark
Harbour. Educational Resource Development Cooperative This project was designed to serve parents of preschool children by
teaching them to use oral language, play and storytelling as a means of
boosting and enriching their pre-literacy skills while strengthening family
bonds. The program is entitled Newfoundland Parent-Child Mother Goose Program.
Froude Avenue Community Centre Funding was provided for the support and enhancement of literacy activities
within the Youth Educational Support Program sponsored by this organization.
Goals include: responding to the literacy needs of children in the area,
elimination of gaps in existing educational and literacy services, and the
utilization of prevention and early intervention strategies. Hoyles-Escasoni Complex Partial funds were provided to assist with the training of volunteers and
expansion of present literacy services available to residents. This program has
been of benefit to both residents and staff. Burin Peninsula Laubach Literacy Council Monies were awarded to assist with the operations of the Learn For Tomorrow
Centre in Marystown. This groups efforts include the fostering and direct
support of literacy needs throughout the region. The Centre is also involved in
working with programs such as Baby's First Book, Children's Library, and
Homework Havens. Topsail Elementary This project was designed to provide intensive intervention for
disadvantaged readers at the primary level through provision of a summer
reading camp. Six and seven year old students of Topsail Elementary took
advantage of the program. Laubach Literacy of Canada Funds were provided to support the position of a field worker to assist with
Laubach's volunteer tutor training programs and other support provided to local
Laubach chapters throughout the province. The primary goal of this project is
to strengthen and develop the leadership of the province's literacy councils.
Brighter Futures Coalition Funds were provided to assist this group with the printing costs associated
with an environmental print book. This book will be used by parents and
children involved in early intervention programs at five sites in the St.
John's region. Random North Development Association Monies were provided to this organization support a project entitled
"Linking Adults with Low Literacy Skills to Skills Training and Employment
Opportunities". The lo term impact of this project is the development of a
unique model that will focus on ad learner needs and capabilities, while
incorporating literacy skills and opportunities for employment. P.O. Box 179 Rocky Harbour, NF A0K 4N0 Contact: Ms. Joan Combdon (458-2043) Monies were provided to support a
""Book Bag program and the in-servicing of parents with regard to the
use of quality children's literature. Objectives include the provision literacy
activities to parents and preschoolers and the creation of an environment where
preschool children can acquire appreciation of books and reading. Labrador Legal Services This project involves the operation of quality education program at the
Labrador Correctional Centre to give inmates access literacy, adult basic
education and enrichment activities. Objectives include: creating positive
experiences with literacy a education for inmates, motiving inmates continuing
education, and establishing a core of trained tutors to assist with the
operation the Centre.
