1998 PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy title

The 1998 PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy was held in St. John's at the Bally Haly Golf and Country Club on September 27 and 28, 1998. This event was founded by Peter Gzowski in 1986. By their ninth year of operation (1994), the PGI's had raised a total of $3.5 million for literacy groups across Canada. Every dollar raised at each PGI stays in that community or region to help support literacy work/programs. In recent years, all funds raised in this province have been presented to the Literacy Development Council to support specific projects. Learner Award photoThe Council has used these funds to support projects such as First-Time Readers and, most recently, family literacy projects. Last year's cheque in the amount of $23,500 was presented to Dr. William Pagan, Chair of the Literacy Development Council.

During this year's fundraising event several awards were distributed. The Cooperators sponsored the Learner Achievement Award. The Council would like to extend congratulations to Ivy Bennett, this year's recipient. The Humber Literacy Council also received the Canada Post Flight for Freedom Award. This presentation is featured in this issue of the Notepad. The Gzowski award was presented to Jim Payne, Newfoundland artist and entertainer, for his contribution to literacy in the province.

The Peter Gzowski Tournament Committee would like to thank the many national, provincial, and local sponsors who continue to make this a successful event.
