| This year from time to time guest editors will be invited to
contribute to The Literacy Notepad. Bessie Merrigan is this month's
contributor.
I am honored to have the opportunity to speak to the literacy providers of
Newfoundland and Labrador through the Literacy Notepad. As President of
Newfoundland and Labrador Laubach Literacy Council (NLLLC), I am very aware of
the literacy needs of the people of this province. NLLLC is committed to
raising the literacy levels of our society through the 24 local councils spread
throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
As a member of the Editorial Committee of the Literacy Notepad and First Time
Readers, I am also aware of the need for all literacy providers to communicate
with each other. I believe the Literacy Notepad is the tool which can be used
to keep us all in touch with what is happening throughout this great province.
Please continue to use this publication not only to promote literacy in your
community, but also to share your thoughts and ideas with other literacy groups
around the province. Remember, all literacy providers have a common goal of a
literate society. Let's work together to ensure success! |
PGI
Golf Tournament
The Literacy Development Council is
pleased to announce that funds raised by the Peter Gzowski Invitational (PGI)
Golf Tournament in Newfoundland and Labrador, have been awarded to two literacy
programs: The Virginia Park Community Centre, St. John's and the Riverhead
Recreation Committee, for literacy resources. Each year the PGI Tournament
donates its funds to literacy programs administered by the Literacy Development
Council.
Also at the PGI Golf Tournament held in St. John's on June 14, 1999 the
Learner Achievement Award was awarded by the Co-Operators to a learner who has
made great accomplishments in a literacy program. This year the award was
presented by the Lieutenant Governor, Dr. A.. M. House to Mr. Elgin (Bud)
Murrin of Cox's Cove in the Bay of Islands; Mr. Murrin has made the round trip
of 120 kilometers from Cox's Cove to the Learning Centre in Corner Brook for
the past one and one-half years to upgrade his education. He has also been
active in lobbying and fundraising efforts for The Learning Centre.
Congratulations Bud!
