Literacy Facts

Twenty two percent of Canadian adults can use reading materials to carry out simple reading tasks only in familiar contexts with clearly laid out formats. They do not have the skills to cope with unfamiliar and more complex reading materials. The reading skills of 16% of Canadian adults are too limited to allow them to deal with the majority of written materials encountered in everyday life.

Helping Students Learn

A READ Bursary provides ten months of one-to-one instruction in basic reading, writing, math and study skills for a child in financial need who is struggling to learn. Thirty students have received READ bursaries this year. However, there are still 40 children waiting for funding. For some, the wait has already been a year long!

Please consider donating to the READ Bursary Fund this Christmas. Your gift of $40 will provide one hour of one -to-one instruction for a student receiving bursary assistance. A gift of $320 will provide one month of individualized instruction . You can help a child get a head start on learning! Thank you.

You can donate on-line: Visit www.readsociety.bc.ca. and click on the Donate Now button or download a donation form and send it to us at 720 Linden Avenue, Victoria BC V8V 4G7
