As we approach the season of giving, I’d like to thank everyone who has given generously to READ so that we can give the gift of learning to others. At our AnnuaI General Meeting in October, I was moved and inspired by the reports given by the coordinators of our various programs. While they generally include statistics, outcomes and dollar figures in their accounts, the true “indicators of success” become apparent when our teachers talk about their students, how much they have accomplished, and how their experience at READ has improved their lives in so many ways. A heartfelt thank you to all our donors, supporters and volunteers!

I’d like to make special mention of the Times Colonist and its support of literacy resources and educational programs on southern Vancouver Island. We were among the 105 organizations receiving cheques (totalling $256,800!) at an event held at the Art Gallery on November 9th. We are grateful to the Times Colonist and to WCG International for sponsoring our full-page International Literacy Day ad on September 8th.

Our thanks to the Foresters, who sponsored - and volunteered at - our first ever SCRABBLE Scramble for Literacy. Thanks also to BC Hydro, Tigh-Na-Mara Resort, Starbucks and the Fairmont Empress for their invaluable support. All proceeds from this event benefit the READ Bursary Fund for Children.

We thank the Vancouver Foundation, Provincial Employees Community ServicesFund, and BC Gaming Policy & Enforcement Branch for supporting our bursaries for children throughout the year.

Last, but certainly not least, a very special thank you to our students for trusting us with your learning.

Have a wonderful holiday and all the best for the coming year!

READ will be closed Monday, December 19th, 2005 to Monday, January 2nd, 2006 inclusive.
