April Showers Bring May Flowers

Things are kind of bleak and dreary outside, but snow is almost gone and the ice is looking pretty black. Soon the rain will make everything green, followed by those little yellow dandelions. The ducks and geese will begin their northward trek. Oh, and don’t forget the black flies. The days are much longer now, lifting our spirits and our thoughts of summer. Easter is just about here and it won’t be long until Mother’s Day. We have had a very busy and productive month. All sites are busy, night classes are full and everyone is so focused on education. Some are doing tests and exams and already looking at next fall’s courses. Learning is such a life-long process, although so rewarding.

Story Time Tips

Children love to hear the human voice. Even babies find great comfort in listening to voices. What a wonderful way for them to hear you speak - reading to them! In fact, one of the best ways to encourage a love of reading is to have regular times for sharing books with your children each day - starting with infancy.

Literacy Fact

Less than 10 per cent of Canadians who could benefit from literacy upgrading programs actually enrol. Research indicates that barriers like job or money problems, lack of childcare and transportation are some of the reasons preventing people from enrolling.

Recipe Corner

Drumstick Bars
2½ cups crushed wafers (I like to use half graham wafers and half oreo wafers)
½ cup melted butter
2 tbsp. peanut butter
½ cup chopped peanuts
Mix well, then pat down into a greased 10 x 13 inch pan, but reserve ½ cup for decorating the bars later.

Filling:
1 - 8 oz. cream cheese
½ cup white sugar
3 eggs
½ cup peanut butter
1 large cool whip
½ tsp. vanilla
6 tbsp. chocolate sauce

Beat all but sauce, and pour onto the crumb bottom layer. Drizzle with the chocolate sauce, then sprinkle with the remaining crumb mixture. Freeze overnight, then serve.
