Volume 1, Issue 1

Spring 2002

A note from the Network...

At a recent meeting of the SMLN Board of Directors, it was decided that the Network would once again begin publishing a newsletter.

From 1995 to 1999, the Network published Netnews with the help of an editorial committee. Past issues can be viewed on the NALD website.

Under its’ new name, Networking will be circulated electronically on a quarterly basis to all SMLN members.

Our hope is to keep the newsletter brief, yet still provide a wide variety of information, articles and information. In most cases, full stories can be accessed via links to existing websites or by request from the Network office.

A copy of this newsletter will also appear on our website — however, NALD cautions that posting times can take up to two months!

You are encouraged to become a frequent visitor to our SMLN discussion page on AlphaCom. (see pg 2 for details!) This will ensure that you are kept current on all Network information, bulletins, updates, and YES, even this newsletter!

In closing, your talents, expertise and opinions are needed in the form of contributions and suggestions for Networking. As always, we welcome any feedback you provide. If it is important to you, it is important to Networking!

There have been many ‘comings and goings’ in and around the Network office in 2001.

Judith Fowler, Coordinator since the Network began (1995) moved from Barrie to Whitby this past October.

Desmond Singh, our Cocoordinator and resident LSP expert, retired in November. In addition, Ally MacKay returned to her substantive position with the Barrie Literacy Council after completing a contract as Director of Social Marketing and Outreach.

Wanda Minnings joined the Network in October as Executive Director. In November, Bonnie Patton was hired as the Administrative Assistant.

In July; Sue McDonald began a 1-year contract as Project Manager for the Workplace Literacy Skills for People with Special Needs project.

Our MTCU rep’s were not immune to change. We began the year with Lisa Ricketts, welcomed Tonya Beveridge in the spring, and were introduced to Audrey Spence before the 1st snow fell.
