Time on the Line “On Line.”

In April, I attended a workshop at the Community Correctional Centre in Pleasantville. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss the roll that computers play in the various correctional institutions across Newfoundland and Labrador. Teachers from all across the Province's justice community were in attendance.

The workshop was sponsored by the John Howard Society and chaired by Mr. Gordon Butler. Mr. Butler has done a great deal of work for inmates and former inmates at SCI. including finding and donating three computers and two printers. The workshop was a great success.

At the workshop the discussion was mostly about the creation of a computer CD that could be used by inmates.

NALD. which stands for the National Adult Literacy Database, is an organization responsible for the collection of adult literacy and reading material in Canada. NALD. has a site on the world wide web where individuals who have an Internet account can view and download literacy material.

Among the NALD. collection of reading material is Time on the Line. Many other prisons and correctional centres across Canada have submitted material written by inmates and their writings have been placed on the NALD. world wide web site as well. Locally, all the prison teachers, including myself, are working on creating a computer CD that would include most of the material that is on the NALD. site but would also include some additional stuff that would be interesting to only inmates. When accessing the CD it would look and act just like the Internet. There will be pages and pages (screens and screens) of reading print material that you would be able to view and print.

...I'll keep you posted.
