Letter To The Editor Dear Editor: Please print my letter in the Time on the Line newspaper. Ones OpinionI became an inmate at the Salmonier Correctional Institution on November 6th, 1997. After being cell-placed, I became acquainted with my new room mates, namely "D. S. and D. R." After we became formally introduced, they told me a little about the school, and its successes, one being the newspaper "Time on The Line." This sure sparked my enthusiasm and I immediately wanted to view its contents and find out more about this new addition to our institution. After reading the paper, I was very impressed with the work of you and your staff. I felt the dedication was very appropriate, "May the Lord be with Princess Diana." The story on page four by "D" was of an extreme interest and left me in a great deal of suspense. I cant wait for the next edition to read the sequel to part one. I enjoyed the cross-word and the word-search. It gave me something to do my first night at S.C.I.. I really hope your paper will be a continued success, and that other inmates will become involved. Sincerely yours, M. B. Over the past summer I spoke to several inmates about the idea of publishing a newspaper at S.C.I.. With a donation of three new computers, some software and two new printers from the John Howard Society I pushed the idea again in early Autumn. The idea of publishing a newspaper at S.C. I. took hold, with the strength of an anchor, in September. Our first paper went to press in Mid-October. Since that first publication the newspaper committee has been praised for their efforts. The above letter is just one example of what most inmates think and feel about Time on the Line. Such words are appreciated and the committee also appreciates the encouraging words it continuously receives from the staff at S.C.I. and from others throughout the Justice community. Also, since our first publication, the original committee has been busy, very busy working on this issue. The task, this time, however, was a difficult one. Several inmates who helped make the first issue a success were released from the Salmonier Correctional Institution. The committee wishes these guys every success. The December issue will have a Christmas theme. We encourage all readers to submit a poem, a story, etc. related to Christmas. To our readers from the larger Justice community send your submissions via Fax: 1 709 229 7114. |
