A government-sponsored survey of CASPs (Godin, 1996) shows that 60% of participants are women, almost half are under 35 years of age, and more than one in four receive income assistance. The findings in the current survey support these data.

Statistics for New Brunswick reveal that more males than females have less than a grade nine education (Statistics Canada, 1991), and more females than males have completed their education to the end of secondary school. Because the CASP offers basic (to grade 6) and intermediate (grades 7-9) academic upgrading. We might expect to find more males than females in the program. Educational levels attained in the past, do not explain the preponderance of women in the CASP.
