Program Mission &
Objectives:
Following the standard provincial curriculum of language arts, mathematics
and science, the Adult Basic Education program at Bartletts Harbour is a
60-week project that provides learners with the means to complete their GEDs.
As such, it can be considered a relatively advanced-level program, intended for
students who already possess fundamental literacy skills.
The program is sponsored by Bartletts Harbour Indian Band Council,
which is also responsible for hiring the full-time professional teacher from
Corner Brook. The instructor is responsible for administering the CAAT intake
assessment test on all learners, as well as for covering the provincial GED
curriculum.
Program Features:
Staff for the program consists of one full-time teacher and one
part-time coordinator. The coordinator functions as both administrator and
tutor, and assists with counselling when necessary.
Currently, there are ten students in the program. All are women ranging
in age between 24 and 34 years. All are expected to receive their GEDs upon
completion of the program in September 1998.
The 60-week program is offered continuously, throughout the year,
though with only one cycle of learners at a time. The Centre in which it
operates is open year-round with a typical 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. schedule,
although summer hours are abbreviated.
