Description

Learners receive a five-week foundation program of life skills and work related information. They take the CAAT for assessment purposes. Based on this assessment, learners enter the literacy unit (or do a combination of literacy and work) or receive academic upgrading, life skills and work related training. Work placements are available in food service, janitorial, clerical and woodshop. If a learner is close to GED level, they can receive focused GED preparation. Upon completion of one of the three streams, learners receive employment support, such as job search skills, on-the-job training, job coaching and development and career counseling.

Learners are usually referred to the program by service providers, and there is an 8-10 week waiting list.

Prerequisites: 18 yrs at end of program.

General Information

Dartmouth Work Activity Society provides on-site employment readiness, academic upgrading and personal/social skill development for social assistance and others in need. Applicants must have plans to enter employment or further training and are 18 years or older. Program sections are five weeks long and are taken as needed.

The society takes 12 new people every five weeks into its "Foundation" program section. Its employment support unit works with those who have completed 3 to 5 sections assisting them with on–the–job skill development and employment. Graduates are supported on an as needed basis. The in–house work activity stations are: Food Services; Clerical/Retail Salers; Janitorial; and General Property Maintenance.

Registration Screening is done by a selection committee. Referral and application form required. Referrals by a social agency or employment counselor. Self–referral accepted.
