Required Education and Experience

Deaf Stream

Deaf Literacy Initiative is a provincial umbrella organization that provides accessible and culturally relevant training, research, networking and resources to the Deaf and Deafblind literacy community in Ontario.

Education and experience requirements to work in a Deaf stream college program

  • Post-secondary degree in English preferred
    • Degree in adult education or a related relevant subject preferred
  • Several years working experience teaching Deaf/Deafblind adults in one or more of the following subject areas: Academic upgrading, English, mathematics, workforce literacy, basic computer skills, personal development and life skills
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) as the language of instruction
  • Thorough familiarity with Deaf culture and issues and the wider Deaf community

Practitioner accreditation and experience requirements to work in a Deaf stream community-based program

  • Post-secondary degree in related area preferred
  • Fluency in ASL as the language of instruction
  • Familiarity with Deaf culture and issues and the wider Deaf community
