Introduction
Lifelong learning is not limited only to training opportunities and/or formal education. Sometimes practitioners need to access a printable manual, a short article, a podcast, material from a website, or even a few tips on various topics. Timely resources can update and inform practitioners. They can keep a practitioner current on topics and provide an introduction new topic areas. Resources can:
- introduce a new subject
- reinforce and deepen training
- provide a needed refresher or update on a given topic
- improve service delivery by providing timely information
- provide “just in time” information and tools
Quality resources are essential to a literacy practitioner's lifelong learning. This section of Community Literacy of Ontario's Lifelong Learning for Literacy Practitioners website will orient you to some of the many online locations at which you can access literacy-related resources. There are literally thousands of resources available, so knowing where to look can save you time, narrow your search and provide you with new opportunities for learning. This website provides a snapshot of the multitude of excellent resources that are available; we have by no means covered all of the potential resources available to you. Instead, we have provided you with a starting point on your search for resources.
This module is divided into two sections. In the first you will find a list of key websites that provide vital resources for your literacy practice. In the second section you will find a selection of resources on skills essential to literacy practice.
Websites are excellent resources. They can provide:
- information about organizations
- up-to-date and important information about causes
- links to publications and resources
- links to related sites
- networking blogs
Many literacy websites also contain valuable information on the literacy field: political issues, statistical facts, professional development and teaching. The websites included in the following two sections are more than just repositories for downloadable resources. They provide current and critical information related to all aspects of the literacy field.
