Literacy Basics - Community Literacy of Ontario

Introduction

The Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) introduced the concept of a Continuous Improvement Performance Management System (CIPMS) to Ontario's Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) adult literacy delivery agencies when it implemented a computer-based Information Management System (IMS) in 2001.

Since then, MTCU has continued to introduce components of CIPMS to the Ontario literacy field. Implementation has varied across the province, so in 2007, MTCU funded Community Literacy of Ontario (CLO), the Ontario Literacy Coalition (OLC), the Deaf Literacy Initiative (DLI) , the Ontario Native Literacy Coalition (ONLC), and La Coalition francophone pour l'alphabétisation et la formation de base en Ontario (La Coalition) to provide CIPMS training to their respective members.

As part of CLO's commitment to providing CIPMS information and training to the Anglophone community-based sector, we have:

• delivered introductory training at Laubach Literacy Ontario's annual conference (Kitchener, June 2007; 34 people trained)
• developed two CIPMS Bulletins (October 2007 and February 2008) http://www.nald.ca/clo. Please click on “Newsletters”
• produced CIPMS e-communiqués (October 2007 and February 2008) http://www.nald.ca/clo. Please click on “E-Communiqués”
• delivered training at CLO's annual conference (Toronto, October 2007; 54 people trained)
• developed and delivered three interactive online workshops (November 2007) that have been recorded and can be accessed at http://alphalive.alphaplus.ca. To listen to the recording, select “public recordings” from the menu on the left side, and then search by date (November 8, 2007) or by event (ABCs of CIPMS3). (70 people trained)
• researched, wrote and distributed The ABCs of CIPMS manual, available in hard copy and in PDF on our website (http://www.nald.ca/literacybasics), and
• developed this self-directed training module for our Literacy Basics (http://www.nald.ca/literacybasics) website.

CLO is pleased to announce that is has received funding from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to continue to provide CIPMS support in 2008/2009. Through the CIPMS: Online and Interactive project, we will be making a recorded version of the ABCs of CIPMS Centra training available through Contact North. We will also be creating an interactive classroom using Moodle where Ontario literacy practitioners can share CIPMS resources, ideas, successes and challenges.
