INTRODUCTION

What will it cost?

We are sure that by now, you are saying "sign me up" to Literacy Basics! You may be wondering about costs. Let us assure you that use of this website is FREE.

The development of Literacy Basics was funded by the National Literacy Secretariat, Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.

What about registration?

Registration can be a technically difficult and intimidating process for some. Privacy issues and remembering passwords can also be a concern.

Because registration can be a barrier for some users, Community Literacy of Ontario decided to keep access to Literacy Basics extremely simple and we did not create a registration process for our website.

Evaluating our site

Community Literacy of Ontario needs evaluative information to support the maintenance and future development of Literacy Basics.

We appreciate your comments and suggestions and we ask that site users (Ontario literacy agencies in particular) send CLO an email (clo@bellnet.ca) telling us how you have used our site, what sections you found valuable and where you are from.

If you have found our training modules to be useful, please let your Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities Program Consultant know. Your positive comments will support our future applications for funding to expand Literacy Basics.

Getting started

The training modules on Literacy Basics are easy to use. Just click on the tab of the module you want to access and then follow the user-friendly navigation bars on the left. Each module is designed to stand alone so you can pick and choose modules and also access them in the order that best suits your needs.

Participants can work through the modules online, or they can print them and work on the modules at times and locations convenient to them. The learning is self-paced and participants can speed up or slow down as necessary. They can use all or just the parts of the modules that are relevant to their needs. Participants can also return to the site as many times as they want and review as much or as little of the content as they need.

Each module contains course readings, sample tools, resources, supplementary readings and Internet links. Throughout each module, you will find "questions for reflection" that encourage you to think about current practices and future program needs.

Technical considerations

Navigation: The site has been designed with a very user-friendly navigation system. Each module is identified by a different coloured tab at the top of the website and a corresponding colour scheme. There is always a detailed menu of topics to the left. Just click on any section heading to get to the desired topic.

Printing: Literacy Basics has also been designed in a "printer friendly" mode. A "printer friendly" version of a web page removes the links on the left and/or at the top and the header graphics creating a nice, neat, easily printable format. The printer-friendly page results in content only and has no navigation links, browser information or images.

Accessibility: Based on the wise advice and experience of the National Adult Literacy Database, this website has been designed following the international standards of the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) in order to ensure ease of access.
