Conclusion
Literacy is about the ability
to read and write at a functional level. It is also about performing
mathematical calculations and oral communications. Reading, writing,
mathematics and even speaking and listening can all readily be broken
down into isolated skills and assessed based on a set of agreed-upon
standards. Literacy is also about having the confidence to learn
and recognizing when learning has happened. It is about recognizing
your own mistakes and your own successes. It is about setting learning
goals and planning how to achieve those goals. It is about being able
to work on your own but also knowing how and when to seek help. It
is about being able to solve problems and make decisions. This is what
we help learners do when we incorporate self-management/self-direction
skills in our literacy programming.
