ABE Camosun College
Camosun provides a variety of options to help students obtain literacy and numeracy skills for employment, upgrade their English, ESL, math, and science skills in self-paced/guided study, lecture-based, day, evening or online formats. Career and education exploration and Learning Skills programs are available as are numerous supportive services such as Aboriginal services, Disability Resources and Help Centres. The college also offers a GED preparation course.

Adolescent Literacy Network (ALN)
The ALN is an informal collective of educators from school districts, universities and other groups who share an interest in improving literacy success for intermediate and secondary students in BC.

Adult Basic Education Association of British Columbia
This association promotes excellence in adult basic education instruction and programming. This site contains membership information, publications and related link sites.

Adult Learning Development Association (ALDA)
ALDA began as a Vancouver area support group for adults with learning disabilities in the early 1980's. Since then their focus has evolved to these roles : advocacy within the community; making referrals to other organizations; providing initial screening services; providing tutoring and advisory services.

Caledonia Lit: The New Caledonia Regional Literacy Coordination Project
This is a cost-Shared Project of the Provincial and Federal Governments designed to strengthen and support literacy organizations and community partnerships in the region served by the College of New Caledonia.

Canucks Family Education Centre
The mandate of the centre is to positively impact low literacy levels on Vancouver’s East side and other locations throughout the province of BC, by providing a co-coordinated, comprehensive, integrated services approach to family literacy and lifelong learning.

Capilano College - Adult Basic Education
Capilano College offers a variety of employment-oriented programs leading to certificates, diplomas and degrees. The ABE program enables students to upgrade their knowledge of English, mathematics, biology, chemistry, earth sciences, physics, geography, history, social studies and computers

Central Okanagan School District Adult Continuing Education
The ACE (Adult Continuing Education) program is designed to assist motivated and academically capable students who are 15 or older. The program is self-paced and academically oriented. Through ACE, students can prepare for the GED, prepare for the LPI (Language Proficiency Index), or can graduate with most college / university prerequisites.

Chilliwack Learning Community Society
The Chilliwack Learning Community Society (CLCS) builds relationships and partnerships to better meet the learning needs of all community members. CLCS has a number of task groups including Early Family Literacy, Youth Literacy, Adult Literacy and Workplace Essential Skills.

College of the Rockies - Creston Campus - Adult Basic Education
The ABE Program offers a wide range of courses and services for expanding your academic, workplace and lifeskills. Courses and services offered are : academic skills upgrading; literacy instruction; education and career planning; secondary school completion (GED); work experience, etc.

The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy
This is a charitable non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote literacy and lifelong learning throughout the Columbia Basin by educating the public about the importance of literacy and by supporting local community actions related to literacy.

Community Learning Network (CLN)
The CLN is designed to help K-12 teachers integrate technology into their classrooms.

Comox Valley Adult Learning Centre
The Adult Learning Centre is an organization of the Community Adult Literacy and Learning Society (CALLS). CALLS is a coalition of interested people who support and promote literacy for all individuals and groups in the Comox Valley.

Delta School District Continuing Education
The Continuing Education branch of the Delta School District focuses on : Programs that offer the community cultural, recreational, academic, and vocational opportunities; Programs, in cooperation with other agencies, organizations and institutes, which address community needs; Coordination and promotion of the effective community use of schools.

Douglas College - Adult Special Education
Douglas College offers a wide variety of programs including university transfer, vocational, career and college preparatory programs. Adult Special Education (ASE) programs are offered for people with special needs, or barriers to employment.

The Irwin Park Project
The proposed "Irwin Park Home for Learning" project offers all people a naturally rich learning environment and an opportunity to be part of creating a legacy for future generations. Continuing projects may include video and photo documentation, animal, plant, habitat and environment research, program planning and designing, and power tool skill development.

Island Adult Development Association
The primary mission of this Association is to promote the social and emotional development and well-being of adults with learning disabilities (LD) and/or Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder (AD/HD). They are committed to serving all adults with LD and/or AD/HD and endeavor to address the specific issues and concerns faced by this population.

Kwantlen University College - Adult Basic Education
ABE, part of Academic and Career Preparation at Kwantlen, is of interest to those students who wish to upgrade specific skills and knowledge in English (reading, writing, spelling, etc.), math and science; obtain a BC Adult Graduation Diploma; prepare to write the General Education Development (GED) test, the Language Proficiency Index (LPI) test, or other specific program entry tests.

Literacy Now Communities program guides communities through a planning process to identify local literacy needs. It is a planning process that focuses on building partnerships, networking and sharing best practices within BC’s communities and regions.

Literacy Now, South Okanagan-Similkameen
This group actively supports members of their communities and helps people find out about literacy activities, services and programs across the region.

Literacy Resources at Vancouver Public Library
The Vancouver Public Library has a large Literacy Collection containing books, audiocassettes, and videos. These materials can be used to improve literacy skills for people whose first language is English. There is also a Language Lab, as well as an Adult Learning Centre.

Literacy Victoria
Literacy Victoria is a non-profit organization providing adults with free help and support in basic reading, writing, mathematics and lifeskills.

Native Education Centre
The Native Education Centre in Vancouver has been offering culturally relevant education and training programs to the Aboriginal community since 1967. In the beginning, the Centre was devoted to a Native Education Initiative which focused on pre-employment preparation. Since then, a broader role was sought with expanded programs in both academic upgrading and skills training.

New Caledonia Regional Literacy Coordination Project
CaledoniaLit is a Cost-Shared Project of the Provincial and Federal Governments designed to strengthen and support literacy organizations and community partnerships in the region served by the College of New Caledonia.

North Island College – Adult Basic Education
The Adult Basic Education (ABE) program offerings at North Island College can take students from the fundamental level of English reading and writing, and basic math right up to the provincial level. All required courses in ABE are transferable, so programs started at NIC may be completed at another college, institution or vice versa.

Northern Lights College - Adult Basic Education
ABE provides the environment and resources for adults to acquire the knowledge necessary for successful entry into the labour market, advancement in careers, or entry into further specialized training. Independent, self-directed mastery learning is encouraged.

Northwest Community College - Adult Special Education
The College provides accessible education by offering innovative courses. Adults with special education needs can acquire basic knowledge leading to fuller participation in the community. Some of the courses offered are : Functional literacy, Survival Math, Interpersonal Skills, Personal Profile and Career Planning, etc.

Partner Assisted Learning (PAL) is a FREE program based in Kamloops, that offers adults one-to-one help in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Volunteer tutors are matched with learners and typically meet once a week for an hour.

Plain Language Partners
Plain Language Partners offers workplace services considering the special needs of the legal and justice communities to help increase efficiency, productivity and communication effectiveness.

The Reading and Writing Centre - Malaspina University-College, Cowichan Campus
The Reading and Writing Centre is an upgrading program for adults wanting to improve their reading, writing, and math skills. The program is in downtown Duncan, open since September of 1999. They teach basic English and math along with computer skills, and they offer both group and individual instruction.

ReadNow BC
ReadNow BC is a government action plan that promotes literacy programs and resources to help all British Columbians improve their reading skills.

Regional Literacy Coordinators Project
The Regional Literacy Coordinators Project out of Northern Lights College, is designed to strengthen and support regional literacy networks and to develop models for regional literacy coordination in B.C.

Research in Practice in Adult Literacy - BC (RiPal-BC)
RiPAL-BC is a grass roots network of individuals and organizations committed to research in practice in adult literacy in BC. Among the main objectives is to promote research in practice and create opportunities for BC practitioners to participate.

Salt Spring Literacy
Salt Spring Literacy is a non-profit, volunteer Society dedicated to the enhancement of literacy on Salt Spring Island. Their current focus is on adult literacy, and they offer volunteer tutors trained to work with adults in one-on-one sessions at no charge. Privacy is assured, and the schedules and desires of the learners are taken into consideration during the process.

Selkirk College - Adult Basic Education
ABE at Selkirk College is designed to allow mature students to develop academic skills, personal management skills, and teamwork skills for use in the labour force, in further academic training, and in their communities.

SkillPlan
Skillplan develops strategies to improve the basic skills of people working in the unionized construction industries of B.C. and Yukon.

Sooke School District Community Education
Sooke School District Community Education has been providing adult literacy and upgrading programs for the past 15 years. A Volunteer Tutor Program was also established. Since that time, Community Education has grown into an adult secondary school, providing from basic literacy to grade 12 for adults in the Victoria area.

TOWES (Test of Workplace Essential Skills)
TOWES is a new test of workplace essential skills which is currently being developed in Canada. Over the coming year, the TOWES project will develop a bank of test items which, collectively, will form the basis for an assessment tool to measure essential skills in workplace settings.

Vancouver Community College - Adult Basic Education
They offer programs to help adults earn their BC Adult Graduation Diploma, prepare for the General Education Development test (GED), improve their literacy skills (reading, writing or math), or upgrade their academic qualifications to pursue further study. VCC also offers programs specifically designed for visually impaired and Deaf and hard of hearing adults.

Vancouver Island University - Career and Academic Preparation (CAP)
CAP provides three upgrading programs: Access Programs that provide Employment and Life Skills to persons with disabilities; Literacy Programs provide Math and English courses to students who need fundamental skills; Adult Basic Education Programs provide High School equivalent courses in a variety of subject areas.

Victoria READ Society
Founded in 1976, the READ Society helps students of all ages in the greater Victoria area learn basic academic skills through small classes, individualized help and a supportive, caring environment.

Volunteer Nanaimo
The mission of this organization is to mobilize people and resources to support community agencies in delivering creative solutions to community problems.
