Literacy specialist services

A Literacy Specialist works one day a week in the Lac La Biche region. Call 780-623-2477, Program for Adult Learning, to access these services. The services for organizations, businesses and individuals include:

• Plain Language Workshop – A workshop for those who write for the public or new employees. Get your point across to more people! A material fee of $5 may apply.
• Plain Language Reviews – Get our specialist to give you some ideas when you’re writing new material.
• Clear Verbal Communication Workshop – A free workshop for those who work with the public or train others. This workshop will help you communicate with those adults who don’t speak English well.
• Literacy Audit – Using the Opening Doors resource, the Literacy Specialist can help your organization evaluate any barriers there might be for the general public in accessing your services. The audit assists organizations and businesses to look through the eyes of someone with communication problems (low reading or writing level or weak English speaking and listening skills). Topics covered include advertising, service delivery, clear verbal communication, clear print materials and staff training.
• Family Literacy – Information, resources, awareness talks and other sessions. The literacy specialist has experience in several family literacy models (Help Your Child to Read and Write, Books Offer Our Kids Success, Rhyme Time, Building Blocks, Home Start) and training in others.
• Literacy Awareness Talks – Take advantage of a short free talk (from 5 minutes to an hour in length). Expand your knowledge and appreciation of this important topic.
• Parent Workshops – Possible topics include learning styles, storytelling and helping your child in the early grades.
• Literacy Displays – Displays and activities on adult or family literacy are available for events.

The Literacy Specialist also works on community literacy projects.
