The Next 100 Years!

A New Millennium!

To some of us the thought of a new millennium brings promise and hope for things to come. For others, those who have difficulty reading and writing, it means very little. Oh sure, they may be caught up in the hype of Y2K and big celebrations on December 31st, but what comes after the celebrations and the parties? How will their lives be affected? What changes are in store for them? Unfortunately, there will be very few changes taking place in their lives. Many of them will still be facing the same challenges they faced in the previous century. They will still be struggling to face the day to day confrontations presented to them because of their inability to read and write well enough to function in a changing world.

We, the tutors, the trainers and all of the other volunteers who make up Laubach Literacy New Brunswick, believe that we can make a difference. We have the knowledge and the skills to help bring about the changes necessary to help other individuals function in today's society. We are a stubborn, dedicated group who refuses to accept that we can't make a difference! You know who you are. You're the tutor who jumps out of bed in the middle of the night to make notes on an idea that just came to you on how you can better help your student. You're the trainer who spends hours going over a presentation, just to be sure you're giving 100% to those who will be attending your next workshop, and you're the executive member who spends long hours at the computer putting together a plan to reach more adult learners.

It's very important while we are having all these wonderful thoughts and ideas that we don't forget the reason behind it all. The adult learner. Our students. Our reason for doing what we do. The real promise for a better future lies within each and every one of them. They are the champions! Without their dedication and hard work there would be no changes taking place.
