PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Hello Friends of Literacy,

Arnie Shaw photo image

In light of the recent tragic events in this modern, technical world it is difficult to rise from the overwhelming sense of sadness which envelops us. How can any of us cope with this feeling of helplessness against such a barbaric and senseless act of terrorism? A heavy heart loaded with sadness is a painful burden that dissipates very slowly. Let us all try to move on and remember that small acts of kindness are one of the most valuable weapons in the world's struggle for peace.

Tutoring is a wonderful act of kindness and those of you who try your best to help others are citizens who keep our society moving forward to greater enlightenment. And the people who work so hard to improve their reading skills are also encouraged to become better citizens in our community. They gain confidence with a positive attitude to life in general. This attitude can generate many critical social values such as:
1. giving
2. sharing
3. helping
4. tolerance
5. empathy
All of these words are probably found in in many religious texts, however; whether you are a person of religion or not, they do convey the qualities of a healthy and vibrant community. Since we in the GMLC are all working for the greater good of our community, let's not lose sight of this compassion which underlies our common effort. Continue being positive and encouraging. Giving of yourself can be a great remedy for a heavy heart.

Arnie Shaw

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES to the Tutors:

Our student representatives, James and Roger, would like to meet with your student if he agrees to it. They would like to talk about upcoming activities organized especially for students. Would you please ask your student if he is interested and then have him, or her, call Pauline at the GMLC Office (859-9587) and leave a name and phone number. If Pauline is not there the answering machine will be on to take a message.
