Focus on health literacy leads Northeast Edmonton Literacy Network to Easy-To-Read Sign Project

Easy-to-Read Sign Project (March 2012)

Authors: Northeast Edmonton Literacy Network

We are an action-oriented network of community agencies and individuals in Edmonton, Alberta. Network activities include:

  • raising awareness of literacy issues
  • helping community agencies create literacy friendly environments
  • organizing professional development workshops

In 2012, our major focus has been on health literacy.

The easy-to-read sign project came about as a result of literacy walkabouts to local doctors' offices. We noticed signs that would be difficult for many people to read, and we offered to develop literacy-friendly signs in clear language. We asked for feedback from the doctors, their staff, and adult literacy learners as we created the signs.

As part of the project, we created a booklet with tips on making easy-to-read signs. It includes sample signs that are free to print and use for non-commercial purposes. We encourage you to share the booklet with doctors' offices in your area. Some of the signs could be used in other types of offices and in school settings, for example, the signs about: no food, turn off cellphone, no perfume, use hand cleaner, remove dirty shoes.

The sign project is a work in progress. We hope to make changes and add more signs as we receive feedback. The booklet is posted on our blog:
