The PEI Literacy Alliance invites all families to come and celebrate Family Literacy Day on Saturday, January 26, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery in Charlottetown. This is a free event.
“PEI has some of the lowest literacy levels in the country,” says Catherine O’Bryan, executive director of the Alliance. “Families play a key role in supporting literacy and there are many ways parents can help their children learn.
“Family literacy isn’t just about reading with your children. We want to show parents that singing, playing, doing art, and talking with their children also promotes everyone’s learning.”
Last year about 150 families came out to celebrate Family Literacy Day.
“We hope that even more join us this year,” says event organizer Jinny Greaves.
Families will enjoy two performances from The Music Man, a reading from Corey Tremere of Ocean 100, a Kindermusik demonstration, a Yo-Yo performance, and a puppet show presented by the PEI Public Library Service. There will be activity booths, face-painting, a scavenger hunt, snacks and an art table.
This year items will be collected for the food bank and each family is asked to take a non-perishable food item.
The event is sponsored by the Confederation Centre of the Arts and Ocean 100. For more information, contact Jinny Greaves at 902-368-1810 or visit www.peiliteracy.ca.
