The National Adult Literacy Database (NALD) supports the activities of its partners by promoting national and provincial/territorial events in the fields of adult literacy and education, family literacy, workplace learning and essential skills. One of these key occasions is International Adult Learners’ Week (IALW) being observed this year from April 2 to 9.
When the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) first launched IALW on September 8, 2000, its founders understood that an effective way to emphasize the importance of lifelong learning was to give adult learners the opportunity to "express their views, describe their challenges, and document their success stories."
NALD adheres to this belief and to this practice by offering its Story of the Week. Through this popular, online feature, adult learners get the opportunity and a venue from which to share personal stories of how they were able to overcome obstacles and improve their skills. By sharing their stories, adult learners inspire and motivate others to write their stories.
“Adult learners deserve enormous credit for taking steps to improve their literacy and essential skills,” says Katherine d’Entremont, CEO of NALD. “Each and every one of them has a personal story to tell that inspires others to follow in their footsteps. We salute those individuals.”
In addition to Story of the Week and new this year, NALD has devoted an entire section of its website to IALW, its history and activities being held across Canada to mark the occasion. The section contains background information, news releases, events and a list of documents from the NALD library that highlight adult learners and their writing.
NALD invites literacy organizations from across Canada to submit their IALW news and events by writing to events@nald.ca. It also encourages visitors to browse the NALD library for resources to help adult learners.
In addition to research documents, NALD’s online library contains learning materials: 1,387 documents in English and 450 in French. All are available for download free of charge, for personal and/or classroom use.
