NALD’s fourth annual Innovative Technology Award up for grabs -- Past winners revisited

If you're aware of an exemplary or innovative technology product, project or service that benefits the field of adult literacy and essential skills in Canada, the National Adult Literacy Database (NALD) would like to hear about it.

There’s still time to submit nominations for NALD’s fourth annual Innovative Technology Award. Nominations will be accepted until April 15, 2013.

“We’re extremely proud of our past winners and I was very fortunate to be on hand for each presentation,” said Bill Stirling, CEO of NALD. “Technology that assists the field of learning has taken off in recent years and actually knows no bounds. Creative minds deserve recognition - especially when their products can be beneficial to learners and supportive of learning outcomes.”

Winner for 2012

The Centre de documentation sur l’éducation des adultes et la condition féminine (CDÉACF), located in Montreal, won the 2012 award for its online repository: Compétencesessentielles.ca - 9 Compétences Essentielles pour apprendre, travailler et vivre. The directory offers practitioners resources that are for the most part available online and can be used in the classroom as well as by those who offer training in the workplace.

Compétencesessentielles.ca is the first French-language website that offers a collection of essential skills resources organized in kits. Each of the kits contains multi-support documents, interactive animation and videos. They are designed primarily for use by adult educators in the fields of literacy, education and workplace training but, in addition, they are suitable for anyone working in adult skills development. Many of the resources can also be used directly by learners.

Winner for 2011

The ESL Literacy Network at Bow Valley College in Calgary, Alberta, won the 2011 award for providing ESL literacy practitioners with access to innovative online resources that inform classroom instruction and support ongoing professional development.

The website provides an in-depth look at ESL literacy levels, learning needs, programming considerations, curriculum development and strategies for classroom instruction. The content provided on the website is based on years of classroom experience at the college combined with research and feedback from ESL literacy practitioners locally, provincially, nationally and internationally. The website recognizes that ESL literacy programs are diverse and serve different learner populations in both urban and rural contexts and in part-time and full-time settings.

Winner for 2010

Dr. Marc Glassman, an adult literacy specialist and a professor in the faculty of education at Memorial University of Newfoundland, won the 2010 award for his contribution to the Stella Burry Community Services Workplace Literacy Project.

The Workplace Literacy Project, headed by Dr. Glassman, engaged content experts in the areas of carpentry and the food-services industry to provide input on the essential skills, vocabulary and foundational knowledge in these two vocational areas. The experts determined that the potential for entry-level, sustainable employment by the project participants would be enhanced if they had an understanding of the relevant concepts and vocabulary of these areas, along with an ability to effectively read and write the concepts and vocabulary. Dr. Glassman converted this content and designed an approach to help achieve the desired learning outcomes.
