Saskatchewan Aboriginal Literacy Network hosts Gathering May 25-27

The Saskatchewan Aboriginal Literacy Network (SALN) will host the fourth Aboriginal Literacy Gathering, a meeting of learners, practitioners and leaders in Aboriginal literacy, May 25-27 in Manitou Beach.

Titled Literacy: An Aboriginal Cultural Tradition, the Gathering will feature well-known author Richard Van Camp as the keynote speaker and Robert Doucette, president of Métis Nation - Saskatchewan, as the closing speaker.

Many Elders will deliver sessions to guide participants along the path that explores literacy. Participants will also enjoy a rich cultural environment of First Nations and Métis cultural activities. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The Saskatchewan Aboriginal Literacy Awards will be presented at the event and the deadline for nominations has been extended to Friday, April 30, at 5 p.m. Recipients will be recognized in each of the following categories: Elder, Practitioner, Learner and Organization/Business.

Award recipients will be recognized at the Saskatchewan Aboriginal Literacy Awards Gala on Tuesday, May 25.

Saskatchewan Advanced Education, Employment and Labour has provided funding to the Saskatchewan Aboriginal Literacy Network Inc. to provide 10 literacy practitioners and up to three learners each the opportunity to attend the Gathering, all expenses paid.

The deadline for applications for practitioner and learner subsidies has also been extended to Friday, April 30, at 5 p.m.
