Community Literacy Worker
4 days a week/26 hours
Parkdale Project Read is a progressive, diverse community literacy program that provides access to learning from a social justice perspective by offering free literacy services in a supportive community. We work with English-speaking adults on their goals for their reading, writing, or basic math or computer skills. We are dedicated to creating a safe and accessible learning environment where everyone can bring their whole selves to learning.
As the newest member of our staff collective, you will provide leadership in the following areas:
- Development of resources for outreach to our communities
- Assessment and support of the needs of adult learners
- Referral of learners to appropriate training, other literacy programs and/or community services based on individual needs
- Working with adult learners through learner-tutor matching and learner-tutor pair support.
- Provide training and support to volunteer literacy tutors
- Support to learners interested in working on PPR Board of Directors and committees
You will work cooperatively with other collective members on:
- Program planning
- Ongoing assessment
- Development of Learning Plans and evaluations
- Group facilitation
- Organizational development and conflict resolution
- Outreach
We are looking for a person with:
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in adult literacy, or other non-formal learning in the community
- Experience facilitating groups in a literacy context, or similar adult learning groups
- Experience in community literacy program planning, with Ontario Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) guidelines an asset
- Appreciation for the concept of a collective, experience working in non-hierarchical team environments
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong critical self reflection skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Interest in and commitment to developing the best possible ways to help all adults learn
- An understanding of and experience working with the diverse communities we work with
- Solid computer skills, including Microsoft Office and other software
- Flexibility to work at least one evening a week
- Finance or fundraising experience an asset
Wage: $28.00 per hour, with benefits after three months and full membership in the staff collective after successful completion of a 6-month probationary period.
