New CEO at NALD

The National Adult Literacy Database (NALD) Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of its new CEO. Bill Stirling joined NALD as interim CEO on July 25, 2011, replacing Katherine d’Entremont who has left the organization to pursue other professional interests.

A member of the NALD Board of Directors since June 2007, Bill is from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, where he has been involved in community, business and economic development for over 20 years. He has been a long-time advisor to small and medium-sized businesses, has managed not-for-profit and private-sector organizations, and has worked at the executive level in the Newfoundland and Labrador public service.

Upon graduating with an MBA from Memorial University in 1990, Bill began his career in community economic development, working in Placentia, the historic French capital of Newfoundland. In 1992, he became manager of the Bishop’s Falls Development Corporation, the community-based organization that was established as a result of the closure of the Newfoundland Railway.

Bill joined the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1998, holding a number of executive director and assistant deputy minister positions over a six-year period. In 2004, he was appointed vice-president of Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) for Newfoundland and Labrador. During his tenure at CME, Bill played a significant role in the promotion and support of training and workplace literacy.

Bill has also been active in the community, having served on the boards of many organizations, including the Northeast Avalon Regional Economic Development Board (chair 2009-2010), the Newfoundland & Labrador Business Coalition (executive member 2010-11), the Newfoundland & Labrador Strategic Partnership Council, and the NALD board and executive.

On behalf of the board of NALD, I would like to thank Katherine d’Entremont for her dedication and many contributions to NALD over the last four years. I would also like to formally welcome Bill. He brings a wealth of skill and commitment to the role and I am confident that the board, staff and stakeholders of NALD will enjoy working with him and that the organization will benefit from his leadership.
